Quick checks before the pro arrives

Safe things a homeowner can look at. Anything involving wiring or opening the well should be left to a licensed provider.

  • Check the breaker

Mountain storms and outages often trip the pump breaker. Reset once; if it trips again, call a pro.

  • Look at the pressure gauge

Near zero with the pump off usually means a pump, switch or wiring issue.

  • Listen for short-cycling

Rapid on/off clicking often means a waterlogged pressure tank.

  • Note storm or flood damage

Wellheads damaged or flooded (e.g. after Helene) should be inspected and the water tested before drinking.

FAQ

Common questions

How deep will my new well be?

There's no way to know in advance. In the mountains, depth depends on where the driller hits enough water in the rock. Providers usually price per foot, so ask how they quote and what happens if the well goes deeper than expected.

Do I need a permit to drill a well in Madison County?

Yes. North Carolina requires a well construction permit from the local health department before drilling, and the well must be drilled by an NC-certified well contractor.

Why do I have no water from my well?

Common causes are a tripped breaker, failed pressure switch, waterlogged tank, bad control box, or a worn pump. A licensed well pro can test each one.

How much does a pump replacement cost?

It depends on well depth, pump size and what else needs replacing. Ask for a written quote. We don't publish prices because they vary by provider and system.

My well flooded or was damaged in a storm. Is the water safe?

Not until it's been inspected, disinfected and tested. Contact the county health department for testing guidance.
